Learn To Build A Simple Chicken Coop Using 4 Tips
Many people are learning to be more self sufficient by trying their hand at keeping some laying chickens in their backyard which means they need to figure out how to build a simple chicken coop. All you need to keep a few laying hens is simple chicken coop. You can easily construct a hen house to provide shelter from weather and protection from predators. As long as you don't plan on keeping more than a handful of laying hens, there is no reason a simple chicken coop can't work for you.
You can save money by looking around your garage or shed and collecting any lumber that you already have on hand. You can use these materials and add to them to build a simple chicken coop easy and cheaply. If you are at all handy, you can easily throw up a simple chicken coop over a weekend.
1. Start With A Plan
Keep in mind that without a firm plan in mind, your intention to build a simple chicken coop can quickly get out of hand. Without a plan, you take the chance that your costs may skyrocket and you could end up with a chicken coop that you don't want or you may hate.
There are so many factors that you need to take into consideration when you sit down and start planning your simple chicken coop.
Do you have large breed or small breed chickens?
How many chickens do you want?
How many nesting boxes do you plan to install?
How much natural light can get in?
Do you need windows or a sunroof panel?
Is it adequately ventilated.
How many access doors do you need?
Do they have direct access to the chicken run?
Can you easily access this area to feed, water and clean?
Does the area drain properly?
Does the area get enough sunlight and shade?
Plan for a larger flock in the future just in case.
The list that I put together are just a few of the things that I take into consider before I start building a chicken coop. If you build a chicken coop that is too small, you will either need to add on or build another chicken coop.
2. Write Your Plan Down
With your list above in hand, sit down and draw up a detailed design before you begin building your simple chicken coop. If you don't have a detailed, to scale drawing of what you have in mind, it will be impossible for you to build it. It needs to be done as close to scale as possible or you will end up not allowing enough room to install enough perches, nesting boxes, etc. and will have to start over. If this is your first DIY chicken coop, don't go crazy trying to add detailed features. Just stick to the basics and you will end up with a functional DIY chicken coop.
3. Make A List Of Materials
In my opinion, you won't be able to figure out what building materials you need to get started without a sketch that is to scale of your chicken coop. You don't want this project to drag on for weeks and you don't want to running to the lumber yard every other hour to buy more supplies. This will add to the time and cost of getting your simple chicken coop built. That being said, I have built more than one chicken coop and I always end up needing to make at least two additional trips to the hardware or lumber store!
These are some of the common building materials you may need:
4x4 posts
2x4's and 2x6's
Plywood and / or some type of siding
Several bags of concrete
Poultry wiring
Cinder blocks
Hammer
Drill
Nails
U-Clips or a staple gun with staples
Roofing materials
Shovel
Post hole digger
This is not a complete list of everything you might need but it is a good starting point. The building materials that you need will depend on exactly the type of simple chicken coop you are building. For example, you can keep it very simple and just use wood siding or you can fancy it up a bit and use aluminum siding.
4. Construct Your Simple Chicken Coop
If you have a detailed plan on paper that you can work from, the construction of your simple chicken coop will go more smoothly. But this next step can be tricky for some peopel. Many times a simple chicken coop looks very easy to build on paper. If you are a DIY expert, you should be ok. If you really don't have any building experience, you may need to call a friend or family member to help you build a simple chicken coop.
