Many beginning guitarists are shocked to find out how many different kinds of guitars there are. From acoustic to electric and all variations in between there are countless types of guitars. If you have decided to play the bass guitar, there are a few simple things you should do to start the learning process off correctly. Before you learn to play the guitar you must learn a few important things about your instrument.

First you must learn how to properly handle and care for your bass guitar. The bass guitar, like any instrument, is fragile and should be handled with care in order to make sure that it remains in good condition. The way you hold your bass is very important - be sure to always use a guitar strap regardless of whether you are sitting or standing. Make sure that your guitar strap is adjusted to a comfortable length, falling across your chest. The center of your bass guitar should fall right around the level of your belly button. When playing, keep your back straight and grip the fret board gently with your thumb resting behind the neck, supporting your hand.

Developing a habit of storing your bass properly is another important aspect to consider when you learn to play the guitar. If you have a soft case for your bass, be sure to keep it somewhere it cannot fall over or be stepped on because it does not provide a great deal of protection for your instrument. A hard case is a little better, but if the case falls over your bass can still be damaged. The best course of action may be to leave your bass on a horizontal surface, out of the way where it will not be stepped on. You may also choose to invest in a guitar stand so that you can display your instrument while also ensuring that it does not fall over. As you learn to play the guitar, do not forget these simple rules about caring for your instrument - the better care you take of your bass guitar the longer you will be able to play and enjoy it.
