Learn to Choose a Battery Charger for an RV
Dedicated battery charging, which means you are not using an RV converter, is the best choice for an RV. With a "smart" RV charger, you can charge RV batteries more quickly and at a higher rate of potential for all battery cells to be charged equally than a single-stage bulk charger with a low rating of five amps. A battery charger is ideal for especially long camping trips or when multiple appliances will be used inside an RV.
1. Choose a stage 3 battery charger. This charger, or "float," produces 13.6 volts and charges batteries 85 percent before releasing a lower voltage to boost the battery up to the final 100 percent. A stage 3 charger is effective, but not as quick as a stage 4 battery charger. It should not be used in extreme heat.
2. Choose a stage 4 battery charger, or "equalizing," which produces up to 15.5 volts and requires only two hours of charge time. A stage 4 battery charger offers the highest potential for all battery cells to be charged equally. It is also the quickest charger on the market, as of July 2010.
3. Consider the size of the battery charger. Choose a 40 or 50 amp battery charger for normal use. A higher voltage may be necessary for especially long road trips or bulky appliances that require additional volts for a faster charge. Determine how reliant you will be on your generator for power and the number of appliances that will be used while on the road.
4. Consider safety issues related to charging batteries. Choose a battery charger with a vented compartment. If the vent does not provide adequate ventilation, speak with the manufacturer about enlarging it. Batteries that have been charged over and over again emit more gas with each charging, which could lead to cracks and leaks.
5. Check the warranty. Choose a battery charger that is guaranteed against breaks and poor circuit control so batteries can be charged as safely as possible.
6. Consider additional features shut as automatic shut-off. Different manufacturers offer various features, so check around before making a purchase.
