Learn to Speak Italian: Not In the Classroom Anymore

Perhaps you want to travel abroad this summer to Italy

, or your place of employment does business with customers in Italy and speaking Italian would provide you added job security; regardless of your reason, there are many ways to learn Italian. While traditional methods are still effective, there are many new approaches to learning Italian.

The Italian language, along with other languages such as French and Spanish, has the same origins. Because they have the same origin, many words are similar or even the same. As you begin your study of Italian, look for words that you already know. This will give you a foundation on which to build additional skills.

The best way to learn Italian, is by total language immersion. This requires traveling to Italy and spending weeks, but ideally months, studying at Italian Schools and being a part of Italian culture. Because total immersion involves speaking only Italian, you learn it more quickly and efficiently. You also learn the subtle nuances of the language and regions; however, since most of us don't have time to dedicate to total immersion, other methods may be more convenient and cost effective.

A tried and true method for learning Italian is the traditional classroom method. Italian classes are taught at local community colleges and universities. The advantage of classroom instruction is someone guides your listening and hearing of the language. Repetition and practice is essential to learning new languages and classroom instruction provides sufficient opportunities for both.

If sitting in a classroom is not to your liking, consider an online course in Italian. There are numerous online schools that offer instruction in Italian. While online classes offer the advantage of studying at your convenience, opportunities for hearing the language are often limited. Look for classes that require textbooks with CD's or other audio options to insure you have the opportunity to hear Italian.

Online classes can be expensive; another way to learn Italian is with a software package. Numerous software programs are available that teach Italian through visual and audio exercises. Some of these programs offer shortcuts and promise you will learn the language in a matter of days or weeks. The concept of the software is language immersion through visual repetition. A more innovative way of learning Italian, is online language immersion. The concept is simple: you are assigned an Italian pen pal. You and the pen pal are given weekly lesson plans. All conversations between the two of you are based on words and topics provided in the lesson plan. The advantage to this method is you are exposed to slang words and idioms used in conversational Italian.

Participating in community conversation groups or hiring a tutor provides further opportunities for learning Italian. There are even websites that for a small fee send daily lessons to your MP3 player or IPod. Regardless of your preference, there are multiples methods for learning Italian for personal or business use.
