Angioedema: Rapid swelling characterizes the condition known as angioedema. The swelling occurs in one of three areas: the dermis, the mucosa or the subcutaneous tissue. When the presentation of angioedema can be classified as "rapid" it should be treated as a medical emergency. Rapid swelling of this type can result in airway obstruction or suffocation. If a patient has trouble breathing or feels as if their throat is closing, it is urgent that a physician is consulted immediately.

In some cases the presentation of angioedema appears similar to hives. But while hives are swellings on the skin's surface, angioedema is classified by swelling below the skin's surface.

In some cases of angioedema individuals may develop welts. The most common location for welts associated with angioedema is around the eyes or lips or on the throat, feet or hands. They sometimes appear uniform (lines), but at other times they are randomly spread in the area.

Abdominal cramping, swollen eyes, difficulty breathing, swollen mouth and swelling in the chemosis are all typical symptoms of angioedema.

Treatment: In some mild cases the condition can safely go without treatment. Pain relief can be obtained with simple cool compresses or soaks.

Allergic angioedema can be effectively treated using epinephrine. In some cases it is a life saving treatment. In addition to being effective against allergic angioedema it is sometimes used to effectively treat hereditary angioedema. Drug induced angioedema is the third type of angioedema. Different treatments are required for the three different types of angioedema to maximize the alleviation of symptoms.

Summary: Quick detection is the most vital aspect of treatment. Prognosis depends heavily on how quickly the condition was identified and treated. The location of the swelling is also an important variable in determining prognosis.

In many cases the cause is never identified. The allergen is not found. But common causes include: animal dander, medication, exposure to sun, heat, cold or water, pollen, foods, insects, etc.
