Learning About Attic Insulation
If you for some reason you can't seem to regulate your home's temperature
, or you are noticing your heating and cooling bills are unjustly high, it could be due to poor insulation in your attic. If you live in a newer home, you may think your house has adequate insulation, but without actually checking, you will not know and could continue to waste your dollars on high heating and cooling bills.
Going Green with Insulation
Taking the time to prevent heat loss in your house is imperative as a home owner. As a home owner, finding ways to cut costs is always on your mind. Realizing a simple task such as re-insulating or insulating your attic for the first time is so beneficial and will leave you looking into other areas in your house as well to make it even more energy efficient. Going Green is such an important aspect of life in today's world, so why not start within in your home!
What is an "R-Value"?
All insulation is a has rating system to determine how resistant it is to heat. It is rated by an "R-value|". The higher the "R-Value", the more resistant it will be to heat and cold. Not every attic needs to be filled with the same "R-Value". There are many variables that can help you determine how high of an "R-Value" you need. Foremost, if you live in a mild climate, you will only need a low "R-Value" since you house is not going to have to battle cold temperatures. The pitch of your house will be something you will want to take into consideration, as the higher the pitch the lower the "R-Value" you will need because the heat will rise and be farther away from the ceiling of your home. Checking the material your roof is made out of will be a big factor. If your shingles are made of asphalt, they will get extremely hot in the sun, heating up the attic even more, resulting in needing a high "R-Value". Whereas if your shingles were wood they wood stay at a considerably lower temperature. Properties that have shade trees are already a step ahead as the trees will help block the sun from heating up the attic and lower what "R-Value" is needed. Finally, if you have some sort of ventilation in the attic such as fans or vents, the hot air will have an escape and again reduce the "R-Value" needed.
Installing Insulation
Before beginning the project, you will need to figure out what "R-Value" is needed and how much installation your attic will take. If you do find that your attic already has some old insulation, don't be too quick to remove it and dispose of it. In most cases you, can just add more and that will bring up the "R-Value" so you will then have adequate insulation. The existing insulation in your attic may look old and ragged; however, that is just because it is old! It shouldn't affect its resistance. Hiring professionals to insulate your attic will ensure the process is quick and non-complicated for you the home owner. You family does not need to leave the home while the insulation is being installed. The professionals will just enter the attic from your crawl-hole, which is usually located in a hallway or closet and have the job completed in a few hours (depending on the size of your attic).
