Learning About How Conveyor Systems Work
There are a number of different kinds of conveyor systems
. Primarily they are used to move materials or products from one place to another. They are used in warehouses, manufacturing plants and many other places. Among these systems are roller, overhead, pivoting and bucket.
Conveyor systems are not new on the scene. They were first brought into use in the 1700's to be used for moving grain. Today they move materials and products in many different businesses, such as manufacturing, transportation, warehousing and many other endeavors.
A roller conveyor is very commonly used to move lightweight boxes and pallets. These items do not require much more than just going from point A to point B. There is no needed processing along the way. They are very simple to use and require very little maintenance.
There are different types of this kind of conveyor. There are gravity ones that do not need electricity but depend on the placement of the conveyance to automatically allow the boxes or pallets to roll down to their destination. This saves the company a lot of money on energy bills. The powered ones use a belt, chain or other mechanism together with an electric motor.
There are incline conveyors which move loads up and down and bucket conveyors which carry materials in a bucket. You also have screw conveyors which move loads turning a screw-type mechanism, belt conveyors which move using a belt and chain conveyors which move items using a chain. All of which do an excellent job and save hours of manpower which would otherwise be needed to complete the same job.
Conveyors are used for many purposes. In ports, they help unload ships by moving things from one loading area to another location, at airports they are used with luggage. In addition, many companies such as Fed Ex move items from customer service to their trucks for shipment and the post office has also used them, for many years, when sorting mail. The Federal OSHA has regulations regarding the amount of noise allowed, safety rails and other safety precautions wherever these conveyors are used.
Maintenance is very strict regarding conveyors and they must show a maintenance record when required by OSHA inspectors. This is to make sure there are no injuries from pieces coming off the conveyor belt due to loose or worn out parts. As a result there have been very few injuries reported from damaged or worn out conveyor systems over the past few years.
