Learning About Magento

eCommerce is a popular business trend in the World Wide Web market and that most

clients in which different web design and development companies encounter are those that wanted to start eCommerce websites.

Due to the growing popularity of eCommerce websites in the Internet, different Open Source programs and web applications were developed for use in the development of eCommerce websites. One of the most popular is Magento. So what is Magento?

What is Magento?

Magento is one of the many open source based eCommerce web application available in the market today. It was launched in March 31, 2008, and since then Magento had become a popular tool used for building eCommerce websites.

History

Before it was known as Magento Inc., the company was first known as Varien. It was developed with the help from different programmers within the open source community, though it is owned solely now by Magento Inc.

In September 2010, Magento launched Magento Mobile, an extension platform used to build native applications for iOS. In February of 2011, eBay announced it had made an investment in Magento in 2010, worth a 49% ownership share of the company.

As of June 6, 2011 eBay owns 100% of Magento. eBay announced that Magento would join eBay's new X.Commerce initiative. Magento's CEO and co-founder Roy Rubin wrote on the Magento blog stating that "Magento will continue to operate out of Los Angeles, with Yoav Kutner and me as its leaders.

Built

According to many Web design Philippines experts, Magento was built using the Zend Framework. Simply known as ZF, Zend Framework is an open source, object-oriented web application framework implemented in PHP 5 and licensed under the New BSD License.

Zend Framework is licensed under the Open Source Initiative (OSI)-approved New BSD License, and all code contributors must sign a Contributor License Agreement (CLA) based on the Apache Software Foundations CLA. The licensing and contribution policies were established to prevent intellectual property issues for commercial ZF users, according to Zend's Andi Gutmans.

In addition to Zen Framwork, Magento also uses the Entity-attribute-value (EAV) database model to store data like on the web developer Philippines.

Entity-attribute-value model (EAV) is a data model to describe entities where the number of attributes (properties, parameters) that can be used to describe them is potentially vast, but the number that will actually apply to a given entity is relatively modest.
