These cranes are very carefully constructed. Operators, sitting in the cab, must operate pedals, levers, dials and switches. Older operators have had to take additional training because of the incorporation of computerized controls that are in many of the newer models. It is essential that these operators are adapt at judging distances and spaces.
There is not much room for error when operating one of these machines. With the operator a number of feet from the ground, communication with those on the ground must be clear and concise. Many times the signals are made by hand although some of the modern companies have communication via remotes and earphones.
There are a number of states with different rules and regulations regarding certification but there are also some states where it is not a requirement. The others require accredited certification and have other pre-requisites. There are various examinations that are taken requiring the operator to show what he or she knows in regard to operating the machinery safely. A written and practical exam must be passed.
There are a number of different sizes of cranes as well as how much load they can carry. When taking the exam the person seeking certification only needs to show ability to operate the largest crane in the category chosen. When passing the written and practical exams the candidates receive a card showing their certification.
A number of forms must be signed at the time of application. Among them is a substance abuse form saying that they do not use an illegal substance. If they break this agreement later their certification can be taken away from them. On certain occasions, the examination can be taken over the Internet and the results learned rather quickly. If the written is passed then the practical is scheduled.
Since it is impossible for anyone not familiar with a crane to know how to operate it, apprenticeship programs are suggested. They require at least three years working on the job as well as over 100 classroom hours during each of these years. This training concerns such things as working near power lines and learning to interpret hand and verbal instructions. This is required to qualify for mobile crane certification.
