Learning About Physical Therapy Specialties

There is one misunderstanding that those who have never had to go to a physical therapist do not realize, and that comes in what the therapist knows

. Most assume that every physical therapist knows the same thing, and that they're all qualified to take care of every aspect of the body. This, however, is not true. While there are some general physical therapists that you can go to, most physical therapists are trained in the knowledge of caring for specific health conditions or specific types of therapy. Going to the right physical therapist is the best way to get your specific condition treated, but you have to know what the different specialties are before you can select which therapist to visit.

The Different Specialty Areas

One thing that is surprising to many is that there are many physical therapists who are trained in how to treat patients who have cardiopulmonary disorders. A particular type of therapy is used to help those who have lung secretions get rid of them, such as patients who are suffering from cystic fibrosis. Those who have heart issues will find that they can increase their endurance through physical therapy, and those who have lost the use of an arm, or who have a weakened system due to a heart attack or similar condition, can also be helped by physical therapy. Many times a physician will request that a patient who has undergone some sort of coronary surgery go to a physical therapist after their surgery to help them strengthen their system.

As we grow older, our muscles tend to weaken, and our bones may get more brittle. The joints may also be painful, and that's why physical therapists sometimes specialize in geriatric physical therapy. This specialty area consists of helping people who are going through the normal aging process and who are starting to experience problems with their body. It can help patients who have situations like arthritis, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, incontinence, and even those who have gone through serious surgeries like joint replacements.

Similar to hold older people can benefit from the help of a physical therapist, pediatric patients can be helped as well. Pediatric physical therapists help pediatric patients who are dealing with serious issues, such as skeletal deformities or those who have congenital issues. They can also help children who have a difficult time with balance and coordination and those who have developmental delays.

And, of course, there are orthopedic physical therapists. These therapists probably represent the most common type of therapists that you'll find and are likely what you're referring to when you talk about physical therapists. These therapists are trained to help someone who is dealing with an injury that has occurred in the musculoskeletal system, and they are trained to work in an in-patient or out-patient setting. The next time you think about physical therapy, remember that there are a number of specialty areas that are designed to benefit different needs. Depending on your particular situation, a specialized physical therapist may be the right decision for you.
