Learning About Porcelain Veneers
One of the most expensive and detailed cosmetic dentist procedures is the placement of porcelain veneers
. During this process the natural tooth surface is removed and replaced with a thin porcelain sheath that is permanently attached to the tooth.
Porcelain veneers offer many advantages, despite their price. They can hide the imperfections in teeth that would take a long time to alter through other dentistry methods.
Some of these imperfections may be short and stubby teeth, wavy surfaces, gaps between teeth, uneven lengths, and they can improve discoloration. In addition, veneers are a man made material that will never discolor.
Veneers can change any set of teeth to be the teeth of your dream with perfect whiteness and shape. This is the method that many celebrities, actors, and performers have been able to develop such perfectly white teeth.
However, there are many disadvantages of porcelain veneers as well. Even though porcelain veneers are advertised as being permanently bonded they do not last forever.
A typical porcelain veneer will last about ten years. As they age veneers can chip, break or fall off at the most inconvenient times and require costly replacements.
This will happen at periodic intervals the rest of your life. Admittedly, porcelain veneers have dramatically improved from the patch up services they were created for in the 1980s.
There are several factors in the life-time of a porcelain veneer. These things include the strength of the bond to the tooth, the patient's bite, and how one will use their teeth.
Some sets of porcelain veneers last well over ten years. Porcelain veneers will most likely continue to improve dramatically over the next few decades.
Occasionally, a patient is unhappy with the results of their veneers. It is possible to changes veneers that do not complement you, however it is very expensive.
It is best to take preventative measures by checking the reputation, warranty, and results of the cosmetic dentist you are thinking of employing to do your teeth. The cosmetic dentist should be able to provide you with a "wax-up" before the actual procedure so that you will be able to see and feel what porcelain veneers will be like.
Mistakes such as not reducing a tooth enough to allow room for the porcelain layer or the lab constructor made the veneers too thick. These mistakes should not be made by a reputable dentist.
Replacing veneers is not only expensive, but also much more difficult for the dentist if you simply do not like the veneers. Not only do they have to place the veneers, but they have the tricky task of removing the previous veneers.
If the first dentist removed too much of the tooth, this could compromise the health and lifetime of your teeth. Be sure to review pictures of past patients that the dentist has had to avoid problems if you are going to get veneers.
Unless there is a problem with your bite, the veneers should not fall off. If they do, it is an indication that the dentist incorrectly bonded them to the tooth.
Bond failures can occur if oil, water, and saliva are not properly cleaned off of the tooth before bonding. Bonding is a much more complicated procedure than it looks like.
Discoloration around the edges of the veneers where the tooth is another indication that the veneers were not bonded properly. This discoloration can occur because of resin cement, gaps, or stains that are sticking to the margin.
Another important note is that veneers are not for nail biters. This is one of the top causes of damage to veneers.
The biggest disadvantage of veneers is their cost. One veneer will cost about $1500 initially, and much more for future replacements. Due to the cost, most people only purchase veneers for six to eight of their most visible teeth.
When only a few teeth receive veneers, the rest must be whitened or the teeth will look mismatched. However, veneers do provide many advantages and can greatly improve the look of a smile while avoiding other expensive dental procedures such as braces.
If you are willing to pay the price, dental veneers are well worth the resulting beautiful smile.
