Learning Hebrew is Intimidating but Possible

Learning Hebrew is Intimidating but Possible

Learning Hebrew is something that a lot of people have considered, but they are hesitant about trying to learn a language that is so different from English. There are many languages across the world, some harder than others. In levels of difficulty, learning Hebrew is probably somewhere between English and Spanish. Although it is not considered one of the easiest languages to learn, it is definitely not the most difficult, and almost anyone who can stick with it will be successful at learning Hebrew.

The difference that tends to throw most people off track is the intimidating Hebrew alphabet. It is very different from our familiar English letters, and to someone who doesn't know what they are looking at, can look like a series of nonsensical symbols. The symbols are beautiful, but fairly complicated, and it takes some time to get them committed to memory. Unfortunately, this is the first and most important step, in learning Hebrew. Just like with our own alphabet, the letters of the Hebrew language are the building blocks that make up whole words.

In one sense, learning Hebrew is compared to learning some of the Romantic languages. The Hebrew language has many grammatical nuances that are masculine or feminine dependent. In Spanish, for example, you have "el" as a masculine pronoun, and "la" as a feminine pronoun. Words that have the same meaning can be different if spoken by, or about, a male or female. The closest language to Hebrew is said to be Arabic, as they are very similar in sound, grammar, and structure. If you already know Arabic, then learning Hebrew is likely to be very easy for you.

You shouldn't allow these trials to discourage you from learning Hebrew. Although the grammar can be confusing and hard to grasp, there is another aspect of the language that makes up for it. The vocabulary in Hebrew is fairly limited, and there are far fewer actual words to learn than there are in most other languages, especially English, where there are sometimes long lists of words that can have the same meaning. Once you have memorized the Hebrew alphabet, and have a good grasp of the grammatical style, then you should have no problem with the rest.

Even though it can be intimidating, and sometimes difficult, there are so many rewards to learning Hebrew that it is well worth the extra effort. The language is beautiful and expressive, even with its limited vocabulary. There is also something very meaningful in learning an ancient language that has survived since biblical times. If you are planning to visit Israel, and take a tour of the Holy Land someday of vacation, your adventure will be so much more meaningful if you know the language. Conversing in Hebrew in its home is a very rewarding experience, and you will get so much more from your trip than hearing everything translated from a tour guide. Learning Hebrew is more than worth the effort, and with all the different avenues available today for learning languages, there is nothing that should stand in the way of your learning God's language.
