Learning Lifes Lessons The Hard Way
Life is all about learning, the more you learn
, the more youll realize you know nothing. Now thats one lesson I had to learn the hard way. And by hard I mean going through five years of Filmmaking in the countrys top school of the arts without mothers full approval.
Blame it on The Secret and my go-getter friends who altogether convinced me that courses in film were no-brainers. All you needed was a pinch of creativity, an ounce of attitude and a trust fund to back you up. I had all three, and more, in the bag. A couple of you can do it, we believe in you and youre director material remarks were enough to make me enroll in Filmmaking. Had I known the short course would take me five years to complete, I wouldve agreed to engage myself in moms
working from home business and sell chemical
free cleaning products instead of slaving over script writing, shooting and editing.
What no-brainer were my friends talking about? I had to squeeze every bit of brain juice out of me in order to come up with a working storyline for my first individual project. It didnt help that my so-called soul sisters always invited themselves into my condo whenever there was a big project coming up. They would insist on starring in my videos and I practically had no choice but document or shoot what mediocre acting they had to offer. After every one of my shoots, they would leave the house in such unkempt state that I have to bring out my
Norwex cleaning products and
clean everything with water. So much for their you can do it pep talk, they were the ones who were making me think otherwise what with their constant uncalled for meddling.
A professor told me that good artists are confident enough to show their works to fellow artists. Thinking I had the makings of a great film student, I posted my short videos on my Facebook page and tagged a couple other film buff friends, film students from my classes and of course, my soul sisters who starred in the said shorts. My page was sure flooded with words of praise what-have-you all from my darling soul sisters, that is. Not that I dont value their opinions but what exactly do they know about filmmaking.
Its unfortunate that I had to learn these life lessons the hard way: stick to what you know regardless of what others say and mom knows best. In my case, I have to just focus on selling
enzyme based cleaning products as mother suggested.
