You probably have tried a wheat beer before but were not aware of it as one

. Most beer drinkers are so attuned to brands that they forgot to inquire what beer style it was or could not care less. Blame it to the power of marketing and advertising.

Most wheat beers are brewed with an abundant amount of wheat and some with quite a large amount of malted barley. However, the variety of beer styles that falls under the wheat beer category are plenty like the ever popular stout beers.

Let us take a list of the well-known wheat beer and see if you have been able to drink a bottle or two.

The most popular original of this beer style would be the Hefeweizen. It was the exception to the German's purity law or the Reinheitsgebot which does not allow German brewers to use wheat as an ingredient in making beer. The noble wants it and so the government made the exemption. It is pale, heavy and cloudy.

American brewers has their own version of a wheat beer. It originated from the Hefeweizen recipe but without the yeasts making it more cleaner and subtler. Brands known for producing great American wheat beers are Sierra evada Unfiltered Wheat Beerm Pyramid Hefe Weizen and Boulevard Unfiltered Wheat.

Berliner Kindl Weisse and Schultheiss Berliner Weisse are noted for this beer style. These Berliner Weisse beers are mostly produced by Northern Germany brewers using a different process. The beer has been fermented using ale yeast with Lactobacillus delbruckii which results to a distinctive taste. Some drinkers would consume it lacing it with flavored syrups.

There are also those that brew darker wheats where the styles fall under Dunkelweizen and Weisenbock. The difference lies on the kind of malt used. Mostly they used Vienna or the Munich malt. It gives a darker color and the alcohol content is much stronger closing on to bock beers.

Variations are numerous as brewers like to mix and match. The more creative the brewer is the more beer styles and hybrid will be produced.
