Learning The Guitar As An Adult For The First Time

For those who love music but cannot get involved in it - which covers a lot of us - there's always an element of frustration

. We listen to the CDs, MP3s and our old LPs too and hear the classic riffs from our guitar heroes, and when we have a moment to contemplate it we can feel a little dissatisfied that we'll never be able to truly replicate those works of wonder. If only we'd taken up the instrument when we were still in school, by now we'd be great, right?

Don't count on it. Often when we are at school we have more than enough to deal with, with the classes, the frustration of adolescent life and more to be getting on with. When you're an adolescent, you have a limited attention span and are less likely to stick to anything. That's not an insult to teenagers, simply a fact of life. But as an adult, you can take up the guitar with a bit more purpose.

Regardless of our age, most of us guitar music fans have something in common. We still imagine ourselves standing on a stage, holding a guitar and getting a quite incredible noise out of it. The kind of noise that would make Jimi Hendrix jealous, make Keith Richards cry and leave Mark Knopfler green with envy. Standing in front of the stage is a massed rank of fans who either want to be with us, or just to be us. Waiting backstage we have a dressing room which is tricked out to our absolute instructions. Life is good.

Then of course, we pick up a guitar and try to play it.

You can learn how to play music which will take you right back to those significant albums you couldn't get enough of when you were at school - and still hear to this day. You may not have managed to get a band together when you were sixteen - and if you did, chances are it didn't last long. But with a little effort and practice, the chance is there to get it up and running for real.
