Learning The Poka-yoke Principle

Likewise, many businesses today use different techniques and strategies in enhancing the productivity of employees. One such strategy is the use of poka-yoke mechanisms. The Japanese term poka-yoke refers to the act of mistake-proofing. Any system that is guided by the principle of error determination to achieve a productive goal can be referred to as a poka-yoke mechanism.

In the business industry, the poka-yoke principle has helped a lot of companies improve production quality. By lowering the occurrences of product defects, which are normally caused by workers, production can be efficient in terms of quality and time consumption. This principle is presented in interesting team-building activities that consequently measure the workers application of their learning.

There are many team-building activities with a poka yoke presentation that can transform typical workers to critical problem-solvers and skillful operators. These presentations are generally not similar to simple team-building activities that develop social interaction and communication, but are sets of learning guidelines for error-proofing and developing individual and team productivity.

In older approaches to the principle, the poka yoke presentation is executed by dismantling a product or device and assembling it after some time. If the product does not work after assembly, then an error was committed and must be eliminated in the next attempt. In more modern approaches, a new element was added. After dismantling the product, some tools are put on a plate. If one tool remains on the plate after reassembly, a mistake has been committed.

Poka-yoke situations are regular occurrences during business production and provide opportunities for learning. This is especially true for businesses and companies that are largely involved in multi-step or multi-process production. A poka yoke presentation may help employees commit fewer mistakes on the production floor. This, in turn, leads to fewer product defects and shorter production times.
