Learning To Bake A Homemade Pie
Learning how to make a delicious homemade creation does not have to be difficult
. The following helps to outline the process of pie baking.
Pies are the epitome of a down-home dessert; they can be delicious enough to entice you into eating two, or three, pieces but easy enough that you can make one yourself. The entire process of baking one is a little extensive, but once you learn how, you should find it to be simple and enjoyable.
This dessert has been around for centuries, and has been made in some form or another by many different cultures and people. In modern society, it is known as the most "American" of confections and can be made out of almost anything.
The crust is arguably the most important part of the whole dessert, and must be made carefully in order to set and cook correctly. Most experienced bakers will encourage novices to make sure that all ingredients, even dry ones like salt and flour, are chilled before mixing.
Mix flour and salt in one bowl and shortening and cold water in another; then, places the two mixtures into the refrigerator to chill. Once you have done so, remove them and mix with a pastry blender or food processor until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Then, add water to the mixture until it turns into dough that is moldable. Divide it into two portions, flatten them into discs, and place in the refrigerator to cool.
While the dough is setting in the fridge, prepare the mixture that you intend to place inside. This could be made of apples, cherries, berries, peaches, or any other type of fruit.
Most fillings will need to be peeled and sliced beforehand; make the process easier by using produce that you have already prepared through canning or another method of food storage or preservation. That way, you can make use of summer fruits even in the dead of winter.
Create a mixture of your favorite spices or those that will be most complementary to the filling you are using and add it. When it comes to apple pie, both cinnamon and brown sugar are great choices to add extra flavor and kick.
When dough has sufficiently set and is cooled, remove it from the refrigerator and roll it out. Prior to the beginning of this process, you should have purchased or found a pan that is suitable to bake a pie in.
Most individuals use tins or glass platters; if you need help, ask an experienced baker or someone at a home store which type of baking pan they prefer to use. When you roll out the dough, it should be about two inches larger than the dish, all the way around.
Pour the mixture into the dish and place any extra trimmings or ingredients on top. You may wish to place pats of butter on top of the filling, to add flavor and moisture to the inside.
If you wish to have a lattice pattern on the top of your pie, purchase a cutting tool to help you slice it into strips. Lay them in the desired pattern over the top of the fruit.
Those that want the top to be completely covered can just roll out the other ball and place it on top. Make sure to cut a few slits in the middle to vent and prevent bubbling or bursting.
After that, you may want to paint the lattice pieces or top layer with milk and butter and dust it with sugar. Bake your creation for about fifteen minutes and then remove it and cover it with foil.
Return it to the oven and continue to bake it for another thirty minutes. Once it is cooked, you will definitely want to allow for some time to cool.
Pie can be a great addition to any feast or holiday dinner or be given as a gift to one of your close friends or family members. Those that do not like fruit or have any available can forego adding a top layer and fill the insides with a creamy chocolate or chiffon filling.
There is almost nothing better than hot pie a la mode, so do not forget to pick up some ice cream at the grocery store beforehand. The two flavors and temperatures mixing together is enough to make almost anyone salivate.
