Learning To Play Golf
There are some important lessons to learn in order to fully enjoy your golfing experience and be on your way to mastering the game
. Five key things you should know are Aim, Putting, Hold, Linking Hands, Body Alignment. I did not investigate the technical side of the game the first time I golfed and it was a disaster. Even if you dont feel you were successful the first time out, keep at it! No one is perfect after one game.
Look at your clubs. They all have a flat edge on the bottom of them. This is for aiming. Move your club so that line is going in the direction you want the ball to go. Just because you aimed in the direction you wanted it to go doesnt always mean that ball will go that way 100% of the time. I hit the ball one time and it hit one area of the head of the club, but my swing was slow and it seemed to roll off of it and hit again. We did hear two distinct hits from the one swing. All the skills come together to make you successful. If my aim was good and my swing was not, it made for a bad stroke.
Putting is one of the hardest things to be good at on the course. Hitting a far distance takes less accuracy than trying to easily drop your ball into a little cup from a short distance. Some would think it was the other way around. I suppose it is a matter of opinion, but putting still takes large amounts of skill to do. First things first, use your putter. Other clubs will not roll the ball and will damage the green. Then, work on perfecting your posture: Eyes over the ball, knees bent, back straight, arms out and a proper grip on the club so you for a pendulum from the shoulders down. Swing no more than a foot out and dont stop when you hit the ball. Remember your etiquette: Dont stand on the green unless you are putting (you may damage the ground beneath the grass), attend the flag for your partner, repair pitch marks that your ball may leave when it lands on the green, and mark your place with a flat object if you are in someones way.
Holding the club correctly keeps you from swinging incorrectly. These tips are for a right-handed golfer, lefties should just reverse it. Taking your left hand first, hold the end of the club in your fingers and wrap your palm around, pointing your thumb down the handle. You should be able to see a couple of your knuckles if done right. Then take your right hand and hold the handle in your fingers, wrapping your palm around again and overlapping your left thumb. Your right thumb will also point down at the ground. Your hands should be very close together, like they are two but operating as one!
After you have the hold down, flip the club up and over your shoulder. You will see the fingers that are sitting very close together. Lift those, and only those fingers up and cross them so they are linked together. Now your hold is complete. It may feel uncomfortable at first but will be vital in hitting the ball.
Aligning your body correctly has a huge effect on how straight your ball will fly. Check that your feet are straight, knees are forward, hips and shoulders are also facing front. Identifying a straight line to your target, usually the flag where the hole is, is called The Ball to Target Line. That is what you want the ball to follow after you hit it. Line up the flat face of your club with the target and then align your body with club to be straight. With practice, you will perfect this.
Other components of the game that will make you great include: Chipping, Pitching, Posture, Stance, Ball Position, Swing, and Etiquette. Keep learning, continue practicing! Enjoy your game of choice. Get your golf game on as well as
