Learning to Control your Subconscious Eating Habits
Subconscious eating is one of the biggest problems for anyone who's just trying to start losing weight. All it is, is eating without realizing it or paying attention like when you at your desk working or in front of the TV and you instinctively reach for some kind of snack.
As a personal trainer this is a problem I am constantly helping clients push through. They start their new training program and without thinking start eating more then they typically would to compensate for however many calories they burned in their training session.
Nutrition makes up one of the biggest components of losing weight, which is justified by the fact that it's also one of the hardest parts to get under your control. Having control of your nutrition means you have full control over how much you weight, but to do this you need to control your subconscious. There are things you can do though that will help show you where you need to be more wary.
The most effective way to get your eating habits under control is to start keeping a food journal. Keeping a food journal may seem like a simple concept, and it is, but if you record everything you eat, and when it will tell you everything you need to know about your diet.

You don't need to keep it anywhere near as formal as this in fact the best food journal I ever kept was a notepad. I kept it in my pocket with a small pencil and whenever I ate something I pulled it out and wrote it down. The good thing about this was I had it on me all of the time and I never had to leave it behind.
If you wanted to track your nutrition more closely you can easily add more columns for fat, protein, and carbs, but it's not necessary. Recording more detail is essential though if you have a specific goal like building muscle though because you need certain levels of protein.
Collecting all of this information is only the first step in controlling your nutrition though. You need to be able to act on what you learn as well. It's not enough knowing you had one too many chocolates. You need to be able to realize you've had too much and say no.
The other big factor in staying on top of subconscious eating and your nutrition is staying accountable for your goals. You need to have a reason for doing what you're doing and you need to have something you can say to yourself to help you through those moments of weakness. You can't rely on other people for this part of the weight loss process, it's something you need to do for yourself and it's one of the hardest and biggest steps you can take especially with nutrition.
Overall if you want to get control of your subconscious eating habits and get a handle on your nutrition you need to start keeping a food journal. On top of that you need to start acting on the information you collect as well. Always keep it in mind that it's much easier to eat 500 calories then it is to burn.
