Leash Training A Puppy For Beginners

Exercise is very important for dogs and they should not be in most outdoor areas when not on a leash

. Starting early is the key when training puppies to do most anything and this includes going for walks. Leash training your puppy can be done very quickly if willing to be consistent and invest the time and patience required.

When beginning, it is best not to use a collar because it may result in an injury to your dog. For smaller dogs using a harness is most often preferred at all times and of benefit in early training. Puppies will also benefit by using a harness because they must learn not to pull until they become accustomed to the feeling of one.

A retractable leash is best used for a dog that is already trained and the leash used should be comfortable to the owner and provide a degree of control. For a few minutes each day, supervise the puppy on the leash inside so that they become accustomed to your connecting it and the feel that it has. It would not be uncommon for them to play with it and even chew it and do not worry about that.

After they have become familiar with their leash, then give them a word to associate with it to indicate that they are going out. It may amaze you how quickly they will learn to love the leash and become excited when it is shown to them. Encouraging them to sit when connecting it is another good training tool and this can be established quickly as well.

When beginning to walk be sure to keep the dog on one side of you depending on whether you are left or right handed. Hold the handle firmly, but also grasp it toward the middle to keep it stiff during training. Whenever the puppy is at the right spot, they need to be encouraged. Using treats and praising them for acceptable behavior will encourage it to continue to happen.

It is to be expected that certain things may happen that will cause them to want to pull ahead. At these times just turn in the opposite direction and continue walking. Establishing your control is vital especially in the beginning.

Eventually one hand will be all that is necessary on the leash for correct positioning. They will remain comfortable in their spot until the first squirrel decides to run by and do not panic. Keep up the appropriate training and just remember that they are dogs with instincts.
