Leash Training Your Dog
Leash training your dog is necessary if you want to have an easier time walking him or taking him to the vet
. You will be assured that excursions with your dog will be pleasant for both of you.
The best time to start leash training is with a new puppy. Training your dog to use a lease may take a couple of days or 1-2 weeks. It all depends on the dog. The most important thing is to be consistent.
Becoming Familiar with the Dog Collar
Your puppy must learn to be comfortable with a collar around his neck. The collar should fit loosely enough that it will not choke him but it should not be so loose that it can be pulled over his head. The collar is the correct size if your thumb can fit comfortably between the dog's coat and the collar.
You can place a collar on your puppy as soon as you bring him home. It may be easier to put the collar on when your puppy is eating or when you are playing with him since these activities would provide a distraction. At first your puppy will try to remove the collar. He will attempt to remove it by scratching at it or by rolling around. Never remove the collar when he is doing this. Wait until your dog is not paying attention to the collar before you remove it. It may take a day or two before your puppy feels comfortable with his new collar.
The Dog Leash
Wait until your dog is feeling comfortable with his collar before introducing him to the leash. To accomplish this attach a leash to the collar and let your dog move around freely. Start out with a lightweight leash.
You can keep your dog safe by supervising him when he has the leash on. Release your dog if he becomes tangled up and let him continue to play.
In a day or two your dog should be comfortable with the leash. The next stage of leash training can begin as soon as your puppy feels comfortable with his leash.
Walking with The Leash
The next step in the dog leash training process is teaching your dog to walk beside you on the leash. This should be done where there are few distractions.
Your leash should be long enough that you can keep it slack and not pull on your dog. Your puppy should be free to walk.
When your puppy pulls on the leash you should stop immediately. If you do not stop instantly you will encourage his behavior of pulling on the leash. Do not yank on the leash but call your dog to come to you. Be sure to praise him for returning to you and then begin walking again. Repeat this process everytime your dog pulls on the leash. If you are consistent with this process your puppy will soon learn he can not go very far if he pulls on the leash. Continue to repeat this process as needed. Consistency is what is important.
It may take a few walks before your dog is not pulling on the leash. Always praise your dog when he performs tasks properly. When your puppy walks three or four steps without pulling take time to praise him and give him a treat.
Dog Leash Training an Adult Dog
Adult dogs are not as easy to leash train as a puppy. This is because a puppy is easier to handle physically since it is smaller. Adult dogs not only have some bad habits to overcome but they are also stronger physically.
Training an adult dog to use a leash is the same procedure as with a puppy. It may be physically more difficult because of the dog's weight and strength but you must maintain full control throughout the training process.
A harness or gentle leader can be helpful when training an older dog to use a lease. The harness will give you control over a dog's body instead of putting strain on his neck. When a dog is wearing a gentle leader his head will go up when he pulls on the leash. This is uncomfortable but not painful.
Leash training your dog is easy. As with all dog training it takes time and patience but the result is a well-behaved dog you can take almost anywhere.
