Leash Training Your Puppy The Safe Way

Exercise is important to raise a healthy dog and taking walks is an important way to obtain it

, but they cannot do this safely when not confined to a leash. In order to achieve the best results in training, it should be started early when teaching puppies and this includes teaching them everything. Leash training your puppy is important to allow them to experience the world, obtain exercise and do it in a safe manner.

When beginning, it is best not to use a collar because it may result in an injury to your dog. For smaller dogs using a harness is most often preferred at all times and of benefit in early training. Puppies will also benefit by using a harness because they must learn not to pull until they become accustomed to the feeling of one.

A retractable leash is best used for a dog that is already trained and the leash used should be comfortable to the owner and provide a degree of control. For a few minutes each day, supervise the puppy on the leash inside so that they become accustomed to your connecting it and the feel that it has. It would not be uncommon for them to play with it and even chew it and do not worry about that.

After they have become familiar with their leash, then give them a word to associate with it to indicate that they are going out. It may amaze you how quickly they will learn to love the leash and become excited when it is shown to them. Encouraging them to sit when connecting it is another good training tool and this can be established quickly as well.

When walking keep them to one side or the other depending on whether you are right or left handed. Hold the loop firmly, but also grasp it as far down as is comfortable to keep it taught when walking. When the puppy is in the correct position beside you it is important to encourage them and let them know that they are doing the right thing. This can be done by using praise and treats to encourage the particular behavior.

They will become excited by things that they see and it will only be natural for them to want to pull ahead. Whenever they try to pull ahead or in an unacceptable direction it is important to correct them by turning in the opposite direction. Establishing that you have control is crucial from the beginning and will make the process go much more smoothly.

Eventually one hand will be all that is necessary on the leash for correct positioning. They will remain comfortable in their spot until the first squirrel decides to run by and do not panic. Keep up the appropriate training and just remember that they are dogs with instincts.
