Leather Coasters, Blotters, And Luxury Items

When I was much younger I had no appreciate for the finer things in life

. I am not talking about taking things for granted like water, education, or the house I lived in; I am talking about the small things that made life a bit more comfortable. This was especially true when I was staying in a four star hotel or at a relative's who owned a very nice house. I was eight when I first saw and found out what a leather desk blotter was. It was at my uncle's place in the south and I was in his office and saw this black placemat-looking thing made of a smooth and somewhat tough material. There was little notch where a metal ballpoint pen was being held. I asked him what it was and what it was used for, I did not really understand at the time why anyone would use it. My thinking was, is the desk alone not good enough? I did not get that there was more to the leather desk blotter than its utility.

Something similar to the blotter were leather coasters; I think I first encountered them soon after finding out what a leather desk blotter was. I was at a party with a bunch of close friends and families and I would randomly see these small circles of a thick material scattered over each and every table. I would see people make the effort to place their wine glasses, beer bottles, or cocktails on these small circles. I remember asking my dad what these were and he told me they were leather coasters. I then asked him why people were putting their glasses on the coasters instead of the cloth on the table. He told me that they were doing it out of courtesy and wanted to respect the wishes of those running the event. They were used so that water marks or spills would not soil the tablecloth and the furniture underneath. Again, I asked myself are these really necessary?

Now, years later, I can say that they are necessary for the way of life that people are portraying. These extra little pieces of flair tell people who see and use them that you are a classy person and are dignified in all respects. You care about presentation as well as the practical utility items like leather coasters and leather blotters are designed to have. As an adult I now understand the need to not only be professional and classy, but look the part as well.
