Leave The Lineups And Worries Behind
Many skiers know the rush and excitement of skiing down a steep slope
. The cool air whips around your face and you see the trees swiftly pass by. For a moment, it seems like the journey down to the bottom of the slope is endless. But what if you can intensify all of these sensations while taking away some of the vices of skiing like the hike up the slope, the hordes of inexperienced skiers, and the hard, icy bed of "snow". Those more interested in extreme sports might want to look into another way of skiing called heli-skiing.
Heli-skiing involves skiing off trail down a mountain. Heli-skiers are taken to the top of the mountain by helicopter instead of using a ski-lift or physical climbing all the way up the steep slopes. Instead of skiing on artificial snow, heli-skiers ski down a natural mountainous terrain covered with dry, light, and airy snow. Unlike the man-made slopes that can get hard and icy, the feeling of heli-skiing is unbelievably smooth because the snow is an almost effortless powder.
On top of all that, you are surrounded by the wilderness and the natural beautiful landscapes of the mountains. There is no need to dodge other skiers in your way. Because groups of heli-skiers are kept small, it's as if you have the whole mountain to yourself. Although heli-skiing can bring a rush of adrenaline, your natural surroundings emanate an air of peaceful and serenity. Up in the mountains, you discover the beauty in being alone in nature away from the hustle and bustle of every day life.
Most companies operating in heli-skiing offer daily, 3, 4, or 7 day packages. Helicopters will fly groups of 4 to 12 up to the mountains. Most of these tours are led by an experienced guide who may have an assistant as a co-guide. The helicopter usually meets the group in an open area. After loading all the proper gear, the skiers are then flown to a landing zone. The guide will designate where and in which direction the skiers can go. The guide may even proceed first to assess the terrain before instructing the others to ski. Some necessary equipment for heli-skiing include layered clothing, goggles, a warm hat, and ski gloves. A backpack is required and is be used to carry avalanche rescue gear. The majority of heli-skiers use powder, fatter off-piste, or "all-mountain" skis because they can handle difficult terrain more easily and are easier to use.
Although there are many mountains to choose from, Revelstoke and Golden British Columbia are the heli-skiing capitals of the world. Heli-skiers travel from Europe and North America specifically for the large amounts of dry and light snow that fall in these locations. Not only is this a rare experience, it is also a great way to meet new people and other skier enthusiasts. Prepare for a weekend getaway and enjoy the moments away from the stress of everyday work life. Up at the top of mountains, there is no need to worry about avoiding other inexperienced skiers, skiing on hard snow,or the annoying hike up the slopes. With the most beautiful terrain surrounding you, there really is no other experience like it. Extreme sport enthusiasts should try heli-skiing for an adventure of a lifetime.
