To begin with, lecturers are required to "lecture" or teach undergraduate and postgraduate students. The process of teaching involves preparing for their lectures in advance by carrying out appropriate research on what they plan to talk about. Other duties of lecturers include giving out assignments and continuous assessment tests to gauge the students' level of comprehension and assisting undergraduate students by shedding more light on difficult concepts outside the classroom environment. In such cases lecturers are simply required to point out one or two publications that the students can read to gain an in depth understanding of a given concept. Supervising midterms and end of semester examinations is another responsibility that lecturers have to undertake. This goes hand in hand with participating in the marking of examinations and other random assessment tests. Assisting in the development of student learning materials and publications, contributing to the students curriculum, visiting and maintaining student's records of attendance and progress and maintaining their own professional development and furthering their own dreams are just a few of the numerous responsibilities that teachers in higher learning institutions such as universities have to deal with.

With that said; this post is not going to insinuate that it can provide these lecturers with a magical formula that they can use to obtain more time to relax and indulge in their hobbies. Instead, this post will provide lecturers with information that can help them simplify the way they do things and how they go about catering to their responsibilities. I'm talking about online booking systems. The systems go by many names some of which include appointment schedulers, scheduler software, online appointment scheduling systems, web based schedulers and many others. For those who haven't heard of these systems, they are electronic systems that require the internet to be able to function. They can be installed in various electronic devices such as laptops, desktop computers, smart phones, iPads and even a few iPods. What is worth noting is that the electronic devices need to be able to connect to the internet and support a browser.

Online booking systems were created to be able to help professional, lecturers included, to be able to manage their busy careers by enabling them to keep track of all their duties and responsibilities easily. One way that online booking systems are able to do this is by providing occasional reminders about certain tasks or duties that the lecturer needs to tend to. Once the systems have been installed on either a smart phone (most preferred since they are highly portable) or a laptop, the lecturer can edit the reminder settings to send out reminders after a given period to enable him not to forget or prevent certain tasks or duties slipping from his mind due to his hectic schedule.

Online booking systems, as the name suggests, can also be used to help lecturers schedule appointments, reschedule or even cancel. In the event that they cannot appear for certain lectures in a day or week then a single message sent via online booking systems to the students and other concerned parties will suffice and will save the lecturer from the hassle of having to make numerous phone calls just to get his message across.
