Led In High Mast Lightings

Light emitting diode, commonly referred as LED is a semiconductor light source

. It was invented in 1962 by Nick Holonyak. LEDs work on the principle of electroluminescence and has been used as an electronic component since 1968. Although in the beginning LEDs found its use as indicator lamp which emitted very low intensity red lights. Recent developments have bought into light that its use can be widely extended for high intensity lightings. Nowadays LEDs find its applications as diverse as aviation lighting, automotive lighting, general lighting, and even as traffic signals.

The advantages of LED are many. In the case of an ordinary incandescent lamp, about 50 percent of the supplied current is wasted as heat but in LEDs only 10 percent is lost as heat and the rest is available as light. LEDs are more power saving when compared to other conventional lightning sources. The basic cost of an LED is less than other sources, hence we will be able to save a much amount of money if we are purchasing an LED light. One of the most important things that make the LED favorites is its life expectancy. Generally solid state devices, say LEDs are less subjected to wear and tear if they are operated at low currents and temperatures. Some of the LEDs manufactured even in the late 70s and 80s are still operating successfully. It is estimated that the lifetime of an average LED is about 25,000 to 100,000 hours.

With these developments in light LEDs also have found their place in being used as high mast lightings and they were found to bring lot of energy savings to high mast outdoor lightings. LEDs have even replaced the use of HID lamps for street lightings. The difficulty of illuminating large areas is not a new problem that we have been facing. But the dawn of high masts have solved this issue in no time. It has been proved that solid state lighting is delivering a significant savings in both energy and maintenance costs. High mast lights are different in nature from the commonly used street lights. The normal street lights are seldom seen to be fixed at a height more than 60 feet while the high mast fixtures are regularly mounted at a height 100 feet above the ground level.

The use of high mast lightings has an unmistakable savings in potential. The LEDs could certainly cut the energy storage and this approach saves about 600 watts. Thus LED lighting is the future of sustainable lighting. The recent developments have also brought new fixtures that make it an easy plug and play installation. These are so designed to retrofit almost any high mast fixtures. With wide range of platforms circular, rectangular or square are also available for fixing these high masts and can be chosen according to the necessity.
