With many slightly dated models dropping in price, and newer models offering more features and better quality it seems that there are few people that wont eventually own a flat screen TV at least.

However, it is arguable that because of the wide range of choice that is available to consumers, when it comes to choosing a TV, many people who are not technologically-minded are simply out of their depth. A basic understanding of some terminology will no doubt aid in making the decision. High definition TV, or HDTV, provides a high-resolution picture, there are two main categories of high definition, 1080p and 720p. 1080p provides a resolution of 2 mega pixels per frame, and 720p provides 1 a resolution of 1 mega pixel per frame. So 1080p offers the highest quality with five times as pixels per frame than standard definition TV.

It is also important to understand the difference between a HD ready TV and a full HD TV. HD ready TVs are capable of displaying HD television however they will require a decoder for the HD TV signals, and full HD will not. The extent to which HD TV is necessary is debatable, as many people have discovered that there are a number of ways to watch programmes online on their TV, such as using an HDMI cable and a laptop, or using online services available with a provider. Depending on where youre streaming from, you might not have an image that does your HD TV justice. Blu-rays, however, are a sure fire way of testing out your TVs quality.
