Leeds, a Modern City

Leeds is a vibrant and bustling city in the heart of West Yorkshire, steeped in history with three major universities (University of Leeds, Leeds Metropolitain University and Leeds Trinity University College which have fuelled the growth of bars and restaurants), as well as galleries, major shopping centres and many more places of interests. Major growth in the area occurred during the 17th and 18th century when the production and trading of wool and the industrial revolution encouraged the growth of innovative industries in flax, engineering, iron foundries and printing, which saw Leeds handling one sixth of England's export trade in 1770.

There are a variety of architecturally important buildings in the city including the Grade I listed Corn Exchange, which had originally operated as a trading exchange for agricultural commodities, is now home to a selection of boutique shops and restaurants. The civic quarter includes some fascinating buildings such as the prominent Leeds town hall which was built in 1858. Leeds is home to fashionable boutiques in a well served shopping quarter, a number of major retailers and fashionable people including a flurry of beauty salons in Leeds.

In 1816 the Leeds and Liverpool canal was designed to help facilitate trade between these two areas, it is over a distance of 127 miles stretching across the Pennines. Leeds has successfully moved it's economy away from the traditional manufacturing areas to a services based economy, that includes retail and one of the largest financial sectors outside of London in England. The growth of the financial sector has given rise to a number of modern buildings in the financial district.

Fairburn Ings RSPB reserve is a habitat for wildfowl and birds that includes marsh, woodland and scrub, the area was reclaimed from disused mines. Other natural areas include Golden Acre Park which is a 137 acre public park that includes lakes. The Chevin is natural beauty spot in Leeds consisting of woodland and heathland, another fabulous natural area is the Yorkshire Dales, an area of outstanding natural beauty located in 683 sq miles that has some of the most scenic and breathtaking valleys and hills in the region.
