Leftover Car Deals - What Exactly Do You Mean?

What exactly is a leftover car that is on a car dealers car lot

In the automotive business when we refer to leftover cars, we are referring to vehicles that are still on the lot from the ending current model year. In other words, usually around late summer the next year's models start hitting the dealer's inventory.

So even though these units are still technically in their current model year, with next year's models arriving in inventory, these vehicles become leftover cars.

So what does that mean to you as a car buyer?

The initial effect on a dealer as these new model year cars arrive isn't that great. But as the year draws closer to an end you can bet that both the manufacturer and the dealer once these leftover cars to go away.

And that can mean a very good deal for you the buyer.

In fact, if you've been around at all, you're probably more than well aware at the end of the year when you see sales, rebates, special financing, and all the rest thrown at you as dealers and manufacturers are feeling the pressure to sell these leftover cars.

There are a couple of minor downsides for you the buyer to be looking at buying a leftover car. The first is that your choices will probably be somewhat limited. There is generally a reason that these cars are still on the dealer's lot. It could be that they are in the least popular color, a slightly unusual combination of trim and accessory packages, or something such as that. However, if you're not as picky a good deal can certainly be had on these cars.

Also keep in mind that if you buy a car at the end of the year, from a book value that car is already a year old. So in effect your car has suffered a bit of depreciation at that point.

Again, these are only minor downsides to looking at leftover cars and can certainly be offset by the type of good car deal you can get on these cars.

These cars can be a little bit more difficult for you to find, but with a little bit of footwork and shopping you may just come across one of the best deals on a car that you could ever get. Don't expect to find these types of cars on the dealer's website, so you'll have to get out there and pound the pavement a little bit.
