Legco (legislative Council) Building: A Historic Landmark In The City Centre

Designed by the famous architect Sir Aston Webb

, the elegant neo-classical style structure that stands in the heart of Hong Kong amid many contemporary skyscrapers is the Legislative Council Building which is also commonly identified as Legco.

This notable building which presently houses the Legislative Council of Hong Kong, was established in the year 1912 on January 15th and was opened by the then well known Governor Sir Frederick Lugard. In 1984 this stunning masterpiece in the city centre gained recognition when it was named a historical monument. The following year, the building was converted to be used as the countrys Legislative Council.

Legco is a building that consists of two storeys and is held up by significantly large and tall columns. The entire building resembles typical old Victorian style architecture apart from the roof that is designed according to classic Chinese tradition. Since this magnificent granite structure was created on reclaimed land piles of Chinese fir trees were used for the foundation. In general the most distinguished feature of the Legislative Council Building in central district is the Greek style pediment that can be found in the centre. This pediment features a statue of Themis, the momentous Greek Goddess of Justice. The grand Legco building becomes a truly stunning sight especially during the night when its lights are all lit up. The architect responsible for the design of the original building Sir Aston Webb also designed the eastern portico of the Buckingham Palace and the Victoria and Albert Museums Cromwell Road frontage.

As a result of the creation of the MTR, Legco was affected quite harshly and therefore some serious restoration was done in year 1978. Tours are not possible at the Legislative Council Building but it is open at certain times of the day to the public when meetings of the Legislative Council are held.
