Legendary Team Heads For Antarctica

Eighteen days had passed in the icy land of Antarctica

, arriving at the airport according to the schedule have seemed to be the finest warm homecoming. Four members of the Antarctica expedition returned home to a hero's reception after nearly three weeks at the bottom of the world. This is just an unbelievable emotional event, this is history.

Bad weather kept the scientific expedition in Antarctica for about 10 more days than anticipated, so when the arrival day finally came, the welcome party was prepared. An hour before the plane had arrived, immediate relatives and friends sat in black plastic airport chairs watching closely the large windows on the runway and glimpsing at their watches. Beneath the lobby, there were 25 students together with teachers and parents, nibbling turkey sandwiches and preparing to caress their instructors with embrace.

Welcome troops brought a bunch of heart twisted balloons, 12 roses and a stack of handcrafted welcome boards including photos of penguins. Members of the team brought two bags of meteorites which will be taken photographs, cut open and tested and shared tales about their accomplished mission. The Antarctic journey also included two astronauts who worked at NASA before, a NASA scientist and a Chicago resident who contributed significantly in funding part of the expedition. The trip took the team to Antarctica's Patriot Hills, South Pole and Thiel Mountains not so high as the Rockies, but just as beautiful.

Back in the States, there was a team member who complained about the technology they had along the way. The satellite phones just aren't good. Providing them of memories of what they let behind were these. In no time he will be able to return to being a professor of astronomy and geology in a populated continent.

This one in particular has not been the only expedition they went on considering unfamiliar territory. In Turkey last summer from the coast of the Black Sea was where the two and their scientific team viewed the solar eclipse. Whilst they were there they experienced a situation similar to the unanticipated longer stay they had in Antarctica. Initially, they went there to see the eclipse but they ended up staying longer due to a massive earthquake. Luckily, the two friends were about 200 miles away from the earthquake's epicenter so their jolts measured only about 5.5 magnitude.

Camaraderie on the trip was what he considered to be the best part of the trip and he also said that there was less stress with images of blue fields and snow covered scenery. Considered to be an exclusive club was the team which had a retired NASA scientist. This group of people was down to earth and you could easily speak with them. Only fun and not egos was their priority. In Antarctica they rode on snowmobiles, talked, read, and went cross country skiing even during their unexpected series of days.

One month ago, the 24 year old team member modeled for reporters and staff members what she planned to wear on her scientific excursion, boots, goggles, heavy gloves and an energetic smile. She wore a cheerful smile upon returning with some sneakers, jeans, and a sweatshirt. This lady was chosen to accompany the team to the Mars like continent because of her enthusiastic use of space science in her classes. Students had an incredible opportunity as well. For learning to happen, everything should be tied in. Living science and history is possible if your teacher is an explorer.

Experimentations done on this trip were on gravity, temperature, and rocks just like what the students back home are doing. Students from 11 classrooms received data by transmission from satellite phone or email. It was extremely funny hearing all the questions and answers. Comical was how the answers all differed from each other. Aside from being in a snowy desert, results can changes when you are in a place where temperatures can go below zero and this is what the students learned.
