Less Than Truckload (ltl) Delivery
Atlanta businesses that require the transportation of goods will likely depend of the services of an Atlanta delivery service
. There are a number of courier companies available, and your choice in a service will largely depend upon the size, description, amount of materials that your business ships on a regular basis. When locating an Atlanta delivery service that will meet your specific needs, there are a number of terms with which you should familiarize yourself. One of these oft used terms is "less than truck load" or LTL for short. LTL refers to any shipment that does not fill the entire truck capacity. Intuitively, the opposite of LTL is FTL, or "full truck load". To fully understand LTL, we need to understand what is required of an FTL shipment. Full truck load shipments consists of enough freight to justify the use and cost of an entire trailer (size may vary) for transportation. If your shipment is less than a full truck load, you will probably want to consider shipping LTL instead.
Less than truckload freight can range from 100 to 10,000 lbs. per load. This drastic difference is necessary to accommodate shipments that are too large for package couriers, but too small to justify the cost of a full truckload. This can include a wide range of freight, and is often used by small businesses that do not transport volumes large enough to warrant full truckload shipments.
LTL shipments can often take longer to complete than a FTL. Because the shipment has to be rerouted, taken to a terminal for sorting, and then loaded onto another truck, it may be redistributed many times before it reaches its destination. It often must stop several times along a route and reloaded into a different vehicle. The delivery service and shipping company will typically have to work a schedule that is most efficient to deliver the shipment, in conjunction with the many other LTL shipments that must be processed. If you require the fastest service available, it may be prudent to take advantage of an FTL is it monetarily feasible. This allows the shipment to be delivered directly without the rerouting required of smaller LTL shipments. If a shipment is time-sensitive, it is best to contact the delivery service and ask about the cost of an FTL in a size that will not be overkill for the amount of freight.
