Lessons Learned

Every adult is looking for that connection when the child they're with

, niece, nephew, daughter, son, student, suddenly looks up at them with wide eyes, a smile on their face and just gets it. They get exactly what you've been trying to say. This moment feels great not only because they've understood you, but because you can now bond over the fact that they've understood you - you've connected. Some might assume that these moments are limited to the classroom but they're not. They could happen anywhere. Over the drawing table, on holiday, at the grocery store. What is that children grasp onto?

1. Things they've seen before:

It's no surprise that a child just learning to speak might start naming colours while they're at the drawing table. For a couple of years they've been watching baby TV filled with coloured blobs bopping around the screen, they've been read storybooks that go something like 'the bicycle was blue' and 'the radio was red'. All of these lessons have registered in their minds so when they can finally start saying the words themselves they will be able to identify what they've known to be true all along.

2. Things you've told them:

I am always impressed when children just learning to speak can remember the names of all their parents friends and family. I can hardly remember all those names and I am twenty-eight years old. But children have minds like sponges and an incredible ability to remember and repeat the things they've been told. Being a good storyteller helps as well, especially when they get older. Growing up kids are inundated with so much information it can be difficult to remember it all. But when it is presented to them with a start, middle and end and told in colloquial language they are much more likely to remember it.

3. Lessons they've learned:

Lessons are learned both from trial and error (experience) and from example, and examples are often taught in the classroom. Teachers educate their students about examples of right and wrong seen through the history of time, they illustrate how chemistry works by example, teach young ones about sharing and consideration by making examples of those students who are doing it well and so on.

The classroom is where we, as humans, go almost every day of our lives until our early twenties to learn. To learn about life, maths, sciences, languages and more. Creating an ideal environment in which your students can learn and grow as people is one of the greatest things an educator can do.
