Let Hydro Demolition Blast Your Troubles Away

Hydro demolition sounds like a cool new water sport combined with a video game

. It is neither a sport nor a game. It is the technique that can be used to remove concrete in preparation for repairs or resurfacing. The process is most often used on concrete that has deteriorated but can also remove solid as well. It was first developed overseas but is widely accepted for use throughout North America. As you can already tell, demolition is a bit of a misnomer. The technique is more for removal and preparation than actual demolition. But doesn't demolition sound so much cooler?

The biggest advantage to hydro demolition is the fact that it does not damage the underlying concrete. Jack hammers or other impact devices can leave tiny fractures in the under layers. This can cause further problems when moisture seeps into these fissures. The resulting vibrations can also cause problems far away from where the work is actually being done. Hydro demolition removes the layers that you want and keeps the layers you do want. It allows much more control than a jack hammer.

Hydro scarification is related to hydro demolition. It uses the same equipment but for a different purpose. Concrete road ways and bridges can have their life extended with a new surface. But, it is not as easy to do with concrete as asphalt. The high pressure system is used to blast away less than an inch of surface. During this process, the underlying surface is scarred. This allows the new bed of concrete topping to adhere. This can extend the life of a surface and delay complete replacement. This saves money in the long run since more life can be pulled from a roadway or bridge.

While hydro demolition is most often used for partial removal, it can also be used for full depth removal of concrete. This is most often the case in concrete structures. The structure itself may be strong, but the surface of the deck or floor may need to be totally replaced. With full depth removal, the surface to be removed will be blasted away without damaging the overall structure. Once the old is removed, a new deck or surface can be poured. This allows for buildings to be rehabilitated more quickly and with less cost. Find out if hydro demolition can be used on your job site. It will save you time and money in the long run.
