Lexmark S305 Review
The Impact S305 includes a fairly simple design, with none of the extra paper trays or document feeders of the higher priced models within the range, however it still has several useful extras.
The paper feeds from a fold-up tray at the back with a tiny spring-loaded flap in the front that nobody seems to be able to explain the true reason for. We used to think that it was to avoid dust dropping to the feed slot, but there's still a substantial space between the paper stack and this flap, even when the tray is fully loaded.
The thin and straightforward Contact Image Sensor (CIS) scanner adds little to the overall height of the machine and runs its full width making it no extra space for a control panel. The control panel is set at an angle projecting from the front of the machine, much like all those new Lexmark all-in-ones. Again, the design is quite simple, with a bitmap mono LCD display (can only show limited graphical information) rather than being 2 lines of 16 characters.
There's two memory card slots and also a PictBridge socket (for direct camera connection) placed at the front right-hand corner of the machine. You can also insert a USB drive on the PictBridge socket by the way.
In spite of the quite low cost, the Impact S305 retains wireless connection and a USB port at the back. Wireless set-up is pretty straightforward and the machine supports WEP, WPA and WPA2 security. In addition, it includes a good set of support software which incorporate a copy of Abby Finereader OCR.
Not surprisingly from a machine with similar print engines as the others that we have previously tested, speed test results are like wise very similar. Our five-page, black text print took 54 seconds to accomplish, which is a speed of 5.55ppm, but this increased to 6.86ppm when we printed the longer, 20-page document. The five-page text and colour graphics test took 1:21, a speed of 3.70ppm. None of these is particularly impressive, though they do sit in the heart of the field for inkjet all-in-ones in this price bracket.
Lexmarks inkjets aren't really recognized for their top printing quality, but this dramatically improved with the introduction of the new individual-ink Vizix engine.. Black text prints are now generally neat and sharp and colour business graphics include some arresting colours, even on plain paper. The colour copies almost looks identical to the original document.
Photo prints are also improved, much less dotty thanks to the improved dither patterns and with good levels of detail in light and dark parts of each image. The colours are lifelike and natural, without veering to the bland.
The Lexmark S305 cartridges are available in two capacities and as return programme or non-return programme versions. Using the higher yield, 100XL ink cartridge return programme versions gives a cost per ISO black page of 4.13p, with 10.13p for an ISO colour page. While they are lesser than before, there's nonetheless about a penny higher per black page and also a couple of pence greater per colour from their several competitors.
The Impact S305 is a surprisingly capable all-in-one at under 100. It uses a similar core print technology as Lexmark machines costing three times the price and the new Vizix print engine shows its paces just as well in this cheaper model, producing much better than common plain paper print and also much better photo print than before. With a great set of data ports along with wireless connection as standard, this machine is not to be out done with its main rivals.
