Reading books is very helpful to children. You can encourage and inspire your child to read by taking him or her to the library. Research suggests that introducing children to the library at a very early age is a way to help them develop communication and reasoning skills that they will use later in their life. It is a way to introduce your child to the world of literature and reading. Library@Orchard, officially opened on 21 October 1999, is located on the fifth floor of the Ngee Ann City Shopping Mall, Podium Block, Tower B, at 391 Orchard Road, #05-22/26, Singapore 238872. It is the sixth rental library to be located in a shopping mall and the 16th community library of the National Library Board (NLB). Library@Orchard is Singapore's first lifestyle library, designed to cater to the needs of young adults aged 18-35 years. It is the first library to be located in the heart of the city, near preschool at Orchard Road.

Library@Orchard is a lifestyle library: its look, collection of books and the programs are aimed to appeal to the target group and kids from childcare Orchard Road. To set up this lifestyle library, NLB actively sought the feedback and suggestions of the target group. Focus groups were consulted for a large part of the process, from the initial survey to picking the books and planning the programs. The library is the first of its kind in Singapore and Asia. The library was officially opened by the Minister for Information and the Arts, Lee Yock Suan, on 21 October 1999. And it was built at a cost of S$2 million.

Public libraries, such as the Library@Orchard, are well positioned to expose children from kindergarten Orchard Road to great opportunities during the crucial preschool and elementary school years. Research shows that children need exposure to a wide variety of high-quality books of various topics, genres, and perspectives in order to acquire literacy skills. They also need books that reflect the diverse and multicultural nature of our society books in which they can see themselves and others like them. By taking the children from nursery Orchard Road to their local public library, you are doing something really important: introducing them to the world of books. What better way to nurture their interest in finding out about the world around them. In the library, all knowledge is at their fingertips.

Good news for children at childcare centers in Orchard Road: Library@Orchard, which closed on 30 November 2007, is scheduled to make an appearance in the first quarter of 2014. It will be part of a new shopping mall which is coming up at the site of the old Specialists Shopping Mall. This will be between Orchard Central and 313@Somerset shopping malls. In terms of size, its going to be slightly bigger than its predecessor at 1,700 square meters.
