Most of us think that the law have blanket punishments for crimes, and that all crimes are scalable, with punishments being equal across the country. But research carried out by Auto Express has revealed that punishments are a bit of a postcode lottery, and police forces are tougher on motoring offences in some areas of the country than others. This is a worry, as it depends where you live on how harshly you are punished for a particular crime, rather than the law being fair across the UK.

Northamptonshire police force had the highest rate for penalty points on a driving licence, with sixteen percent of drivers receiving them, yet in Durham there were only two percent of drivers with this punishment.

Hertfordshire had the highest statistics for drivers caught without Car Insurance , while Cumbria showed twelve percent of motorists had been caught speeding. This means that each police force is focussing on a different part of car crime, which is lucky for the speeders in Hertfordshire and vice versa.

Half of drivers in the country of Nottinghamshire were caught jumping a red light and Merseyside has the largest percentage of drivers caught using their mobile phones wile operating a vehicle.

In Scotland, it seems that this is happening too, with twenty one percent of motorists in the Dumfries and Galloway region receiving points to their driving licence, which in Strathclyde this was a less common offence, with only eight percent of drivers receiving the same.

Auto Express news and features editor Julie Sinclair said: "Our investigation reveals the shocking truth behind the police penalty points system in the UK, that it's a postcode lottery.

It seems that some police forces focus on different crimes to others, meaning that there isn't a fair and just balance across the country. Where you live can decide whether you have a lot or little points on your licence.
