Life Can Change On a Dime

Peter used to be a plain old fisherman. He lived an average life, in an average place, doing an average job. The only way Peter commanded attention at all was because of his physical strength and an uncommon stubborness that made him put out to sea when others feared too.
But life can change on a dime. Life can be trudging along minding its own mundane business until one day... Jesus came to town. Jesus was famous throughout Galilee. The preacher, the miracle worker, the cousin of John the Baptiser. There was plenty of gossip. Peter wasn't bothered, he'd heard it all before, the next Saviour of Israel. Blah, blah, blah.
Peter could never pinpoint exactly what made Jesus come to his boat. He could never tell you exactly what made him put down his nets and take up the life of a disciple. He wasn't a religious man. He had no time for people who thought they knew it all. It all seemed like one long competition to see who could win God's approval.
Life can change on a dime. He felt like a tiny child learning to walk, or a man with perfect eyesight who could no longer see. Every time he thought he finally got it, somehow he lost it again. He walked on water (briefly), he healed the sick (sometimes), he was one of the very few who understood who Jesus was (to a point).
Peter, the man who faced down the mighty waves that others feared, learned what fear really was. He learned his hardest lessons in a garden and by a fire. Jesus was his master, he had left everything for Jesus, but Peter had been warned that he would get to a point when fear would master him. And, despite everything he knew, it did.
So now he was in his boat again, the only thing place he could think to go. Failure and despair went with him. All that effort, belief, love and faith come to nothing. All destroyed by five words. 'I do not know Him'.
Later, Peter understood what made Jesus come to his boat. He could tell you exactly what made him put down his nets. Jesus, who would allow a man to go the edge of reason, despair and humiliation knowing that he would be safe. Jesus had been there first and He knew the way back. And Jesus knew that Peter would come back different. Nothing average about that.
