Willington is a beautiful town, steeped in history and located four miles from Bishop Auckland and seven miles from Durham

. Willington is also known historically for its efforts in the mining industry. Located in the Pennines and close to the River Wear, it had a vast abundance of coal. With its proximity to the River Wear, coal was able to be transported around the north east easily. Upon the pit's closure in the sixties, it became very clear that new industries were needed in order to give the town a lease of life, as the majority of the local community were either directly or indirectly employed by the pit, from miners themselves to logistics and catering companies. Willington has struggled to overturn the down turn in the local economy, but it is now considered as a town on the up.

In historical news, there have been several events that have shaped the local town. These include Thomas Barton, a miner who was killed in a tragic mining accident following the brave rescue of a child from a burning building in the 1900s. A memorial to him is within St Stephen's cemetery. A railway incident also occurred in the 1860s, where wagons free-rolled away and ploughed into a stationary train, from which passengers were alighting. Many were severely and horrifically injured.

Willington, Crook is a superb, picturesque place to live, full of industry, retail and restaurants to cater to the local community. The local train station connects Willington to Derby, Leeds, Newcastle and Birmingham through excellent transport links with the use of the East Coast Main Line in reasonable distance. The local public transport takes the form of buses and provides a frequent service to surrounding towns. WIllington is also located near to the North Sea, bringing in many oil rig employees to the local area as well as excellent, fresh speciality sea food dishes as you would expect from any major coastal town.

Willington, Crook has good local schools and great access to retail parks and supermarkets, pubs and restaurants. Many properties within Willington, Crook are available at reasonable prices and come in decent sizes also. For the older residents, nursing and care homes are also situated within the town. The local area has a good sized population and new housing developments are being erected at a rate of knots. It is an exciting time to be involved in Willington and the local area.

Crook Golf Club is situated just outside of Willington and provides the local area with an excellent, challenging course for all abilities from beginner to professional. The main A590 runs through Willington and provides links between Durham and Crook. There are also an array of comfortable and affordable hotels within Willington. The local football team plays in the 11th tier of the English Football League. Willington appears to be a very interesting place to live for young people, families and older residents. With the support of the local community, new families and new businesses are flocking to the area all the time.
