Dogs have been man's companions since before there was written language. Life size dog statues are art, ambience, and homage to that relationship. They can be a memorial to a past companion, or appreciation of the characteristics inherent in a particular breed.
For example, a bulldog statue may speak to the laidback, gentle, clownish side of their character; or it may showcase their steadfastness, determination and protective side.
Finding realistic life size dog statues used to be difficult, and for many of the less well-known or larger breeds, impossible. The time and money a manufacturer invested in developing a workable statue was not going to be recovered for any but the most popular (and smaller) breeds. As the size increased, weight became an issue because the only viable' material was cement. The properties of cement did not allow for intricate detail, and to prevent stress fractures, the posing was sometimes awkward.
Wood has also been used for life size dog statues, but as the size increases, the price of the material goes up enormously. Larger breeds would need a much larger uncut block of wood, significantly more expensive than an equal volume of smaller pieces. Each statue had to be hand carved, adding greatly to the expense.
Now there is polyresin, a material that is strong and lightweight. It will accept the most minute detail in the mold, down to a single hair. A bulldog statue will show all the facial wrinkles, whisker warts, jowls and whatever expression the artist has intended.
Long-haired breeds can be shown in all their flowing glory; their coat need not be truncated since (in cement) it would most likely have broken off anyway. Poses can be more natural, as long as the statue can stand on its own it is a viable production.
There is only one original necessary when using polyresin. Like cement, a mold is made of the original; then the mold is duplicated as many times as needed. Liquefied resin is poured into the molds, and allowed to harden.
Polyresin is weather reisistant, so may be used indoors or out. A life size dog statue may be individual, or part of a tableaux- a mother and pups, dogs playing together, a hunting scene.
Some lines of manufacturers also have supplies available for their life size dog statues. You can purchase a polyresin doghouse, feeding dishes or toys. Poses can range from sitting, standing, sprawled, curled up, guarding, invitation to play, walking, or in show or hunting stance. Expressions can be inquisitive, sad, hopeful or happy.
Although it is still easier to find smaller or more popular breeds, thanks to the internet, you can find practically any breed in any pose you wish. It is even possible to get a replica of a beloved companion, all that is needed are photographs from each side. Color artists are able to match color shading and placement exactly. The more detailed the picture, the more completely they can duplicate your pet.
