Life's not so easy...is it?
To begin with let me say raising children is difficult, but it is not "Thankless". You just have to remember that even though they are your children, they're not you. Oh, they have many similarities and they may even look like you, but they are not exact clones of you. Many people(parents) make the same assumptions that I did. I'm writting in hopes that you will realize my mistakes and do better with your own.
Remember two little things
1. You're not a clone of your parents and neither are they clones of you.
2. You're raising them to live their lives not yours, you've had your chance!
Now, "You're not a clone" this is an easy concept for most, but lets go through it anyway. You child may look like you may even act like you at times, but not ALL the time. Your not thinking for them and belive me you don't want to try. They are not going to react as you did all the time in every situation and they shouldn't. (Thats how history repeats itself) They don't want to hear how you had it; although they are the best stories to tell; and they don't want to hear the words " I TOLD YOU SO!" Let them believe that they're situation is at least slightly unique. They are going to say " You Don't get it or that you Don't understand" That's fine is not that important to prove that you do. What is important; however; is listening to every sorted detail of the current issue and responding as the parent they need. Start with words like, "well, I've been in SIMILAR situations yet not exactly like yours, but I can TRY to help IF you'd like me to. This gets you back in the spot of a concerned yet not "ALL KNOWING" parent. The " ALL KNOWING" parent is great when they are 3, but not when they are 13 and certainly not when they are 16 or older. A couple of things can happen here. Given the severity of the situation you will want to "fly of the handle" or you may even want to cry, but your not going to show that weakness (they can smell it you know). Your going to remain calm and help them through it with some advise or thoughts on the subject from you allowing them the ability to make they're own decisions. In doing so you may have to remind them of house hold rules, consequences, things like that, but do not threaten or yell, your trying to mold responsible adults here. Sometimes firmness and even beligerence with you rules is necessary, but knowledge is always the best power and as long as you remain calm they will continue to keep you aware of whats going on. Thats exactly where you want to be.
In order for children to grow into adults they have to realize they own self worth and that you've given them the internal strengths to take on all challenges. Even when they make mistakes your going to care, but they need to"own" and "Fix" their own situations its they "final answer" that counts, and they will need that when your gone.
