Lifetime Ban on Gay Blood Donation Questioned

Blood transfusion was a gold mine discovered 343 years ago. While it undergone major blows in its early life which resulted to the practice being debarred, it was able to recover in 1818, when it become a success. It acquired an overwhelming popularity among medical experts, seeing the great possibilities of saving patients from death due to massive blood loss. Years later it was effectively used to treat a blood disease called thrombocytopenia or severe anemia, hemophilia or sickle-cell disease and others. And with the help of advance technology, different applications were developed.

For years it appeared that blood transfusion was a huge success that almost every physician would often recommend a blood transfer. But until now, it is suffering from many gusts, including the acquisition infectious diseases such as HIV and hepatitis to name a few. Others also refuse to accept blood transfusion not only because of complications but also of personal or religious reasons. On the other hand, some medical experts in lab coats and medical uniforms are thoroughly studying bloodless surgery and other medical procedures not involving blood.

Thus blood donations are screened for protection to avoid complications and infections. They've also prohibited people who have had tattoo, semi-permanent make-up or any cosmetic piercing in the past six months. And since 1985 gays are banned from donating blood as well. On 1977, lifetime ban apply to men who have had sex with a man, as they have notably higher risk of having been infected with HIV than the general public.

However the issue whether the lifetime ban is scientific is being questioned. Advocacy groups, blood-collection organizations and even some members of the congress are calling for the Food and Drug Administration to revise the lifetime ban. Some recommend a deferral or waiting period and the FDA is looking into possibilities and hopefully, solid solution to this matter.

Lifting gay blood donation ban was raised to answer issues like blood scarcity in blood banks, inconsistency on rules regarding gays donating tissue and organs as against the regulation on blood donation, and the scientific proof regarding high HIV risk among gay men. Whether or not gays will be allowed to donate blood in the future will have to depend on the safety of blood that is going to intravenously be transferred to patients, as they will suffer the consequences at the end of the day, not the decision makers, not those people in lab coats and medical uniforms, but the end users themselves.
