Light Bulb Jokes Are Forever (unlike Light Bulbs)

We have a new endangered species in the United States

. Don't get too concerned. It doesn't have babies and there still are billions around. It's the light bulb. That is to say, it's our old incandescent light bulb. It's the glass, round thingy with the filament inside. You know, the one you shake to see if it's broken. That's the one that's dying off.

Technically, it's called a lamp, by the way. But you call it whatever you want because we won't really need a name for it pretty soon anyway!

As you may remember, legislation was passed a few years ago that requires light bulb manufacturers to get 30 percent more efficient. The effect is that 100-watt incandescent light bulbs will be phased out nationwide in 2012. In 2013, the 75-watt incandescent bulb will bow out. And by the end of 2014, the 60- and 40-watt bulbs will be extinct, too.

fact that when you flip the switch, there will be instant, predictable, light each and every time. I've talked to these people. They don't like this change and they especially don't like CFLs (Compact Fluorescent Lamps). They don't like the way those lights flicker on. They don't like the color or amount of light they put out. And they don't like the fact that they have to "warm up."

I have some news for all those CFL-haters and the rest of us more tolerant folks, too.

First, there are Halogen lamps. Halogen lamps look and act very much like an ordinary light bulbs but they put out more visible light for the same amount of energy, so they get to stay. Halogens put out a different quality of light, too. So, for those of us who want the bulb, there is the Halogen.

You can see LED lights everywhere you go these days. They are in the tail lights of many cars. They are in the emergency lights of most police and fire vehicles. And they are in practically every flashlight you can buy. I'm sure you saw thousands of LED lights on Christmas decorations and they are the up-and-comers.

The first and second generations of consumer LED lights are on the shelves now and I suspect they will only get smaller, less expensive, and better as the years go by. Right now LEDs can enable 90 percent energy savings, last 50 times longer, and don't contain mercury, lead, etc., like CFLs. LEDs are where we are headed - light bulb-wise.

Speaking of CFLs: In a rush to get to market many years ago, CFLs got a bad rap. The color was bad. They took a long time to warm up. And later, people found out they have mercury, which seems to defeat the environmental effort. The latest and greatest CFLs have better color, faster start-ups and warm-ups, and last longer. They are still a good alternative to the light bulb and they are pretty inexpensive. They also have less mercury but they still need to be disposed of at a hazardous waste facility. (Check online for a place in your area.)

Here's how the various lamps compare as far as light. Each light puts out 450 lumens (amount of light), and each light puts out the same color. The difference is how much energy each one will consume to do the exact same job. It takes 40 watts with an incandescent lamp; 29 watts with a Halogen lamp; 11 watts with a CFL; and 9 watts with an LED lamp.

In general speaking, 12V LED has become more and more affordable, therefore auto LED bulbs have been used widely.
