Light-powered Bionic Eye Produced By Us Scientists

Leading scientists in the US have put together a bionic eye which runs on light

, it has been widely reported.

The brand new device which has been developed by a team at Stanford University in California, works with the use of specially designed glasses which help to push near infrared light into the eye, the BBC stated in its report.

The light helps the implant to function and then sends the information, which could allow a patient to see.

At the moment, retinal implants used in patients require batteries to power the device.

Furthermore, some sight-related diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration, destroy cells which are able to detect light in the eye which leads to blindness.

The use of retinal implants can help to simulate nerves in the back of the eye. This has resulted in some patients being able to see, the BBC stated.

Moreover, the BBC stated that in a UK trial, two men went from being completely blind to being able to perceive light and some shapes.

Despite the success of this trial, a battery is required behind the ear and wiring is needed to link the two pieces together. As well as this, a chip must also be secured behind the retina.

However, the new device which was revealed in the journal Nature Photonics, does not require the complex electronics and wiring, the scientists were stated as saying.

The way it functions is through securing a retinal implant in the back of the eye. The glasses will be fitted with a video camera and will be able to record the process before it fires a beam of near infrared light onto the retinal chips, thus generating an electric signal which is further relayed to the nerves.

"Because the photovoltaic implant is thin and wireless, the surgical procedure is much simpler than in other retinal prosthetic approaches," the researchers stated.

"Such a fully integrated wireless implant promises the restoration of useful vision to patients blinded by degenerative retinal diseases."

Despite the fact that the new implant has not been tested in people, it has been proven to function correctly in rats, the BBC stated.
