Like virtual me, my golf game needs work
Last year, my dear wife - Mrs Game Junkie - gave me a set of discount golf clubs for my birthday (bear with me, dear readers, there is a video game connection with this).
I played the odd Taylormade R7 CGB Max Series between October and December but in thelastmonth,I've played twice with a workcolleague and once with my father-in-law and whileI'll never give Tiger Woods or Rory McIlroy a run for their money in the Masters, I like to think that I'm improving with each game.
However, playingTiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters (Xbox 360 version) over the weekend made me realise that my virtual golf game needs as much work as my real golf game does.
I'm not planning on giving up my day job anytime soon and I must apologise to the virtual spectator standing alongside the fairway on the fifth hole at the Augusta golf course - the one that I, somehow, managed to smack right in the 'nads with my Taylormade R7 CGB Max Series. The camera followed the path of the ball and Igrimaced as I saw the computer-generated chap double over, grabbing his crotch area. Sorry, mate, though I guess that's what you get when you stand so close to a fairway.
Apology over, thesimilarities between my (lack of) golf skill and those of my video game avatar are uncanny:I candrive the ball relatively straight in real-life (most of the time) as can myvirtual golfer in The Masters. My drives are superb and generally make the fairway most of the time.
I can usually manage lay-up shots fairly easily, too, but where I get stuck in both real-life golf and virtual Taylormade R7 CGB Max Series is my putting: for some reason I can quite easily take three putts to sink the ball. It's quite frustrating: here my virtual golfing avatar is displaying the same characteristics as I am in real-life. The only thing that is missing is the cursing and unsportsman-like behaviour when I fail to sink the ball on my fourth attempt.
I've been enjoying TWPGA12: The Masters (and am liking the inclusion of a caddie who offers advice, although - and this is being pickie- because the caddie's bib can only fit seven letters, it reads'Campbel') and as a newcomer to golf, I'm enjoying the history lesson on great Masters moments of the past. Like my real Taylormade R7 CGB Max Series, though, I need to play it more to ensure that my handicap doesn't continue to be me (insert laugh track here).
