Limited Access Roads: Why, How and Where...

Around the world, limited access roads have a variety of names, such as dual-carriageway, limited access highway, or expressways. The term limited access comes from the ability to access the roads from only certain points. This term usually defines state highways that are bordered by both commercial and residential properties and have authorized access points throughout the length of the road. Of the state highway network, approximately 37% consists of limited access roads.

Why Limited Access Roads Exist

The first limited access road in the United States was in New York at the Bronx River Parkway. This system of roads was created to make a network of roads that could be traveled on at higher speeds around the city. This concept has evolved over time to uninterrupted arterial roads that are known as expressways or super highways around the world.

The reason that limited access roads were created was in the interest of safety for drivers. These types of roads are typically built in areas that have unrestricted commercial or residential growth potential. With this growth comes a higher amount of traffic needing access and thus increasing safety risks.

There are limited access highways around the world. Each country has their own unique system governing the use of this type of roadway. In the United States the MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices) has full control access of freeways. Expressways in the United States typically have partial control access, which allows interchanges, development of commercial buildings as well as cross roads to be accessed.

Canada also has developed expressways and freeways to guide traffic through the country. One example of a limited access highway or freeway is the Gardiner Expressway that runs through the heart of Toronto.

In Australia, most of the major cities have a network of motorways. However, there are cities throughout the country such as Geelong, Newcastle, Wollongong, and Gold Coast rely heavily on limited access roads to help maintain the flow of high speed traffic in local areas.

Many of the countries throughout Asia, including Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan and India, use limited access roads. These roads are crucial to helping control traffic in areas where a large amount of people live, especially throughout India and Japan.

European countries have developed limited access roads as well. These countries use this type of road to help control the Amount of traffic that occurs in certain areas, especially around cities.

Using Limited Access Roads

Limited access roads exist simply to make getting from one point to another faster and safer. These types of roads are designed to give individual drivers the chance to drive at a higher speed without the risk of running into residential and commercial areas where there may be pedestrians, children, bike riders, etc. Simply put, the limited access road helps the flow of traffic in and around cities. These roads also help travelers get through states and across large areas of land at a much faster pace.
