Linden Homes Helps Smooth The Move For Those Looking To Downsize
With a new report suggesting that older people whose children have left home should
downsize to smaller houses, Linden Homes is offering relevant downsizing solutions at developments such as Indigo Mews in Broadstone, near Poole.
More than half of the over-65s in the UK are said to be living in homes with two or more "wasted" spare bedrooms, according to the recent report, 'Hoarding of Homes', from new think tank the Intergenerational Foundation. The foundation is keen to promote downsizing to these 'empty nesters' in order to free up more properties for younger families.
And while the report has proved controversial, and Housing Minister Grant Shapps has been quick to reassure homeowners that the Government has no intention of 'bullying' people out of their homes, its publication has been very effective in placing the idea of downsizing under the media spotlight - and highlighting some of the advantages associated with it.
Comfort, convenience and energy efficiency for downsizers
The Intergenerational Foundation's report also proposes a number of new policies to help counteract the problem of under-occupation among older people. These include breaking down barriers to moving home and downsizing, such as the removal of Stamp Duty for anyone wanting to downsize, and encouraging more property to be specifically built to target this demographic.
Linden Homes' Indigo Mews development in Broadstone is an excellent example of the kind of new homes now being built specifically, but not exclusively, with downsizers in mind. Nestled in a tranquil suburb just north of Poole, Indigo Mews is made up of just 14 carefully designed two-bedroom apartments set across two buildings, priced from 235,000. The development is only a minute's walk from The Broadway, which is home to a selection of local stores including a butcher, a baker, a chemist, two supermarkets, banks, a newsagent, and cafs and restaurants.
Indigo Mews not only has a handy location with good local amenities, but the properties there also have access to a lift and private parking, and each apartment is stylish and comfortable. What's more, these new homes in Dorset are designed to be very energy efficient, helping to save on energy bills and reduce householders' environmental impact. By law, all new-build properties have to be energy efficient and these apartments have been very well insulated and fitted with efficient gas central heating and carpets.
Removing the barriers to downsizing
With the report also highlighting the fact that the huge task of packing up and moving home can put many people off downsizing, Linden Homes has launched an 'Assisted Move' scheme to help take the stress out of the process. They help by arranging a valuation on your existing home, helping to find a buyer for it, and helping you put a deposit down on your new home - and paying the agent's fees.
