Copyright (c) 2010 Lakeland MarketingHere is my experience with wearing Lingual Braces.Lingual braces are like traditional braces that are worn on the teeth to correct misshapen teeth. Where Lingual braces differ from traditional braces is that they are worn on the inside of the teeth, rendering them almost completely invisible.So, if you do not let people know that you're wearing Lingual braces, no one will have a clue you're wearing braces, unlike traditional braces.A number of disadvantages with wearing lingual braces do exist. As the braces are worn on the inside of the teeth, it can prove to be quite uncomfortable at first for a small number of people. It is possible that your tongue could catch on the braces causing small cuts and slight swelling. On occasions, a slight lisp can sometimes be caused by an inability to fully press the tongue against the back of the teeth during speech. Cost can also be a factor as Lingual brace dentistry is a lot rarer due to the difficulty in adjusting the braces. As a result, Lingual brace dentistry can be more expensive.After being informed that I required braces I then weighed up the pros and cons and made the decision to have Lingual braces fitted. This was as a result of the stealth factor, as well as the fact that a close friend had worn them and had seen amazing results.Initial ProcessI phoned the dentist that my friend had recommended and set up an appointment to have an assessment. After taking some x-rays and reviewing my teeth, I was delighted to be told that Lingual Braces were appropriate for my situation. The Dentist explained how my teeth were crooked and overcrowded however, he said this was a common problem and 18 months of wearing Lingual braces would result in excellent results.The ApplicationAfter making the decision to go ahead with Lingual braces, I then had another consultation where more x-rays and moulds of my teeth were taken. This was so that the dentist could start the manufacture of the brackets that would be fitted to the back of my teeth to locate the braces. Not long after that, I was at the Dentist again for the fitting of the brackets and although I was nervous, I should not have been as the process was straight forward and more to the point, painless.Although I had undertaken lots of research prior to making the decision to have Lingual braces, it was still daunting to embark on what is a long term commitment to your dental care. The day that the top braces were fitted came around quickly and I have to say, it went very smoothly and resulted in zero pain. Although at first it did feel strange having the braces, after a week or so it just became normal. During the first week, the main problem I encountered was that slight cutting to my tongue occurred as I tried to eat at the same speed. Once I slowed everything down a little, this soon went away and the wax which was provided by my Dentist lowered the occurrence of the cuts. The final lower brace fitting went as smoothly as the top brace and I now had the full set. Again it took somewhere in region of a week to get used to the braces. A few cuts occurred again but with the help of the wax and also slowing my eating down, this soon stopped.Every six weeks I had to return to the dentist to have the braces tightened which involved changing the wires. This did prove a little uncomfortable for the first few days as the tightening cause's pressure on the teeth. This discomfort was short lived however and after a week, was all but gone.The ProcessI quickly settled into the routine of visiting the Dentist every six weeks and started to look forward to seeing how the braces were correcting the crookedness of my teeth. The weeks just flew by and as if by magic I began to see the shape of my teeth change. After two or three months of wearing the braces, my routine became easy. For the most part, I forgot I that was wearing braces; unless I forgot to apply the wax and my tongue would become tender. I remember vividly the day, some 18 months later, when the braces were removed. I was excited and a little upset to be losing my braces. The results were fantastic, my teeth were straight and although a few discoloration marks were visible; my Dentist told me that using a tooth whitening product would remove these and leave my teeth bright white again. I now have perfect teeth and regularly get compliments on my beautiful teeth. My friends even comment how they wished they had teeth like mine.In summaryGiven the same situation again, I would not hesitate in having Lingual braces fitted. The majority of the problems I encountered were minor and the time went very quickly. The extra expense of the Lingual braces was well worth it and is money I consider well spent. I wish you could see my smile now!
