An important part of building a successful blog is generating incoming links which boost important ratings such as Technorati authority and Google Page Rank. Some bloggers have resorted to using link bait to generate incoming links. Is link baiting a good idea?

As the blogosphere becomes more competitive, bloggers are constantly looking for ways to grow their blogs. One important measure of a blog's success comes from the number of incoming links to it, particularly links from other popular blogs and websites. Search engines such as Google and Technorati use incoming links as a factor in determining how popular a blog is with the thought being, more popular blogs are more authoritative and should be ranked higher in search results.

Rankings on sites such as Google and Technorati affect bloggers in several ways. First, advertisers typically look at those rankings to gauge the popularity of a blog, which affects the amount they're willing to pay to place advertisements on that blog. Second, higher rankings typically equate to more traffic simply because search results often deliver results from higher ranking sites first.

With those factors in mind, bloggers pursue many avenues to increase the number of links to their blogs. Some bloggers resort to writing posts deemed as "link bait". In simplest terms, link bait posts are those written primarily because they are likely to generate traffic. Typically, link bait posts are written about hot topics (think Britney Spears), which might have nothing to do with the blog topic. However, the blogger hopes to get a boost in traffic by writing about the link bait topic.

The question many bloggers ask is whether or not link baiting is a good idea. The pros and cons of link baiting are discussed below to help you make an educated decision before you write a post for link bait purposes.

Link baiting usually works in terms of driving short term traffic bursts to your blog. A hot buzz topic that people are actively searching for online will undoubtedly drive traffic to your blog. If you're one of the first bloggers to write about a buzz topic before it truly catches fire across the Internet, then you're likely to have a lot of other blogs and websites link to your post as reference. That means a boost in your Google and Technorati rankings thanks to those links. Link baiting works in that it drives new visitors to your blog who may not have found it otherwise. The hope is that some of those visitors will turn into loyal readers and return again and again. It also works in terms of getting your name out there across the blogosphere and helping you gain a reputation.

Link baiting drives traffic, but most of that traffic is usually short-lived. The vast majority of people who arrive at your blog through link bait won't return. However, if the link bait topic is directly related to the subject of your blog and you have something useful to contribute to the link bait topic, then you do stand a good chance of driving some conversation on your blog and some repeat traffic. Additionally, link bait not only brings short-lived traffic, but it also brings the wrong kind of traffic. In other words, the people who arrive on your blog via link bait might be very different than the audience you want to visit your blog. Link bait can often bring visitors who don't know you and your blog community and may leave offensive comments or attack your loyal readers.
