A lipid panel test is a type of blood test which measures the lipids, cholesterol and lipoproteins in your body. This type of test is usually ordered by your doctor to determine your risk for cardiovascular diseases such as coronary heart disease and stroke. Lipid panel test is also called lipid profile or coronary risk panel test.

It is usually ordered for adults with high risk for cardiovascular disease. It will require fasting for about nine to twelve hours. This means that you will not eat or drink anything until after the testing. To perform the test, blood will be extracted from a vein in the upper extremity using a needle. Sometimes, fingerprick is also used to draw blood. This is done by puncturing the fingertip to get the blood sample.

Other measurements that may be done for a lipid panel include:

Very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol level.

The ratio of total cholesterol to HDL.

The ratio of LDL to HDL.
